trebuchet- pile driver- catapult

I asked Ian to creat something new, and he built a working TREBUCHET.

The throwing arm is a #6 beam and the counter-weight is a series of #3 and #2 beams.

The projectile is a pink cardboard pig.

As the counter-weight descends, the throwing arm pivots and the pig flies.

                            PILE DRIVER

I used the same set-up, but now the throwing arm is the "pounding" arm.

I attached a line to the arm and ran it under the structure and back to the right.

Pulling on the line makes the arm pivot down and pounds  the #4 beam into the ball of aluminum.

Here's a close-up of the arm hitting the top of the #4 beam

I laid a piece of styrofoam across a pair of #2 beams.

It didn't take much to break it.

CATAPULT-differs from a trebuchet in that there is no falling counter-weight.

The arm is made of 3 #6 beams bolted together.I attached a line to the end

of the arm and ran it down under the white sheave ( the sheave is hidden to the left of the brick)

Pull down on the line, and the arm pivots up and flings the "load".
